As Americans plead for news and help from their local and national officials, it is becoming clear that no help and very little news are forthcoming. The CDC announced today that although they are desperately trying to sequence the genetic code of CINS and produce a vaccine, the pandemic is beyond a Level 5, the very worst extreme, and they cannot project any cap on the spread of the virus.
The nation is in the grips of a worst-case scenario. In a mere week we have witnessed the abandonment of cities, bodies piling up in the streets and the collapse of daily life. Although experts knew to prepare for a virulent pandemic, they never modeled a scenario where the infected turned on those around them to aggressively spread the disease.
Communities cannot rally together when they are forced to hide from or murder the sick in self-defense. Trust is non-existent as people wonder if their loved ones are infected. Even law enforcement is not trusted, as troops fall prey to the disease by transmission as they battle the infected.
Worse yet, food, water and energy sources are vanishing as looting and scavenging heads into the fourth day. Power-station workers and fuel managers are infected or vanished, causing lights to go out in many cities and towns.
If there is a point of no return for society, a moment beyond which a return to normal life is out of the question, the CDC’s announcement may have marked our calendar, today, as that point.
